The Riverhawk men's baseball team traveled to Cumberland, MD this past Saturday (5/5) for their last regular season double-header against Conference, Region & Division opponent – Trojans of Allegany College of Maryland. With the Region tournament starting next week, it was an important day for each team.

The Trojans would grab game 1 in walk off fashion, 3-2, while the Riverhawks would respond by splitting the day, taking game 2, 7-6.

Game 1 Notes

The Riverhawks would ultimately fall to Allegany College of Maryland, 3-2, on the final play of the game. The game was tied at two with ACM batting in the bottom of the eighth when a Trojan singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

Pitching proved to be strong on both sides as Allegany College of Maryland pitchers struck out nine, while AACC also sat down nine.

The Riverhawks fired up the offense in the second inning, when a sacrifice bunt by Ian Sterling (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) scored one run for AACC.

Allegany College of Maryland evened things up at two in the bottom of the seventh inning with a single on a 3-2 count, scoring one run.

Dustin Gosnell (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) took the loss for the Riverhawks, allowing three hits and one run over one and one-third innings, striking out two and walking one.

John Iaquinta (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) started the game for AACC and surrendered just one run on five hits over five and a third innings, while striking out six.

Leonard Lehner (Edgewater, MD/South River) went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Riverhawks in hits.

Game 2 Notes

Despite seeing a five-run lead whittled down by the end, the Riverhawks still held off the Trojans of Allegany College of Maryland for a 7-6 victory on Saturday (5/5) to split the day. The Trojans scored four runs in the failed comeback on an error in the fourth, a double in the seventh, and an error in the seventh.

Compared to game one, the base paths were crowded in this high-scoring stretch, as the Riverhawks collected nine hits to match the Trojan's nine.

AACC pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning as an error scored two before notching another four runs in the fourth thanks to singles by Samuel Ryan (Pasadena, MD/Northeast) and Leonard Lehner (Edgewater, MD/South River).

Allegany College of Maryland scored three runs in the seventh inning, but it just wasn't enough to pull off a sweep.

Christopher Clyde (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) got the win for AACC, as he allowed two hits and two runs over three innings, striking out four. Dominic Stanbery (Dunkirk, MD/Northern) and Brady Helinski (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief as Helinski earned the save as he recorded the last out the Riverhawks.

Ryan Key (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and Samuel Ryan each racked up multiple hits for the Riverhawks as Key went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead and Sam going 2-for-4.
