ARNOLD, Md. -- Anne Arundel Community College Athletics mourns the passing of former baseball coach and athletic director Charles "Skip" Brown, who passed away at the age of 86 on Saturday, July 11.
Brown led the AACC baseball team for 19 seasons, guiding the then-Pioneers to a pair of JUCO World Series appearances, highlighted by a third-place finish in 1974. Brown led AACC to two NJCAA Region XX titles, was twice named Region XX Coach of the Year and was named District Coach of the Year on two occasions. He was named MDJUCO Coach of the year in his first season at the helm and again five more times throughout his career.
Brown compiled a 368-153 record during his tenure, during which 25 of his players signed professional contracts.
"Few individuals have had a greater impact on AACC Athletics than Coach Skip Brown," said Athletic Director Duane Herr '07. "Through his leadership, mentorship and commitment to student-athletes, he helped establish the culture of excellence that continues to define AACC Athletics today. The countless former players who return to Skip Brown Field and speak fondly of his influence are a testament to the lasting mark he made on generations of student-athletes. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and former players and are forever grateful for his contributions to AACC."
In 1997, Brown was inducted into the AACC Athletics Hall of Fame, and in 2001, AACC named the baseball field after the legendary coach. Brown was also inducted into the Western Maryland College Athletics Hall of Fame (1991) and the Anne Arundel County Sports Hall of Fame (2009).
Brown served as the Pioneers' athletic director from 1986-88, and was chair of AACC's health and physical education department for 17 years. He also served as the head coach of the soccer team, as an assistant football coach, and an assistant basketball coach.
