ARNOLD, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College baseball team settled for a split against visiting CCBC Dundalk in a doubleheader at Skip Brown Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Riverhawks handily won the first game, 11-2, and led for most of the nightcap before falling to the Lions, 4-2. AACC combined for 10 stolen bases on the day, led by five from Sam Ross.
Game One
AACC scored five runs in the first inning, added two in the second, and plated four in the fifth, taking advantage of five Dundalk errors in the game.
Ethan Hopkins had the only hit of the first inning, a three-run double to center, to cap the five-run start. With two outs and runners on first and second in the second inning, an error by the Lions centerfielder allowed two AACC runs to come across. Agustin Murillo drove in the first run of the fifth with a single to left center before two more runs came across via bases-loaded walk, and another on a bases-loaded wild pitch.
Dundalk's two runs came courtesy of a two-out double down the left field line.
Sophomore pitcher Jack Davidson struck out seven and allowed two unearned runs on six hits in his first complete-game effort of the season.
Game Two
Dundalk scored two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to erase a 2-0 AACC lead and take the win. AACC had gained the lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings.
Ross led off the third with a single before stealing second and third. Griffin Klein drove him in with a single up the middle. The Riverhawks carried that momentum into the top of the fourth when they ended the inning on a dramatic double play.
With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Wes Cullison sent Murillo across with a single to center for a 2-0 lead. It was still going the Riverhawks' way in the fifth when Klein ended the inning by throwing out an attempted steal at second.
But in the sixth, an infield error by the Riverhawks prolonged the inning that saw C. Wright tie up the game with a two-out, two-run home run. The Lions then retired the Riverhawks in order in the bottom of the inning.
AACC got a quick first out in the seventh before allowing back-to-back singles. The next out was a fly out to right, but the next batter was hit to load the bases and set up the Lions for a two-run single to center and a 4-2 lead. Dundalk rode that feeling into the bottom half of the inning where the Lions retired the Riverhawks in order.
Starting pitcher Nicco Holland struck out five and allowed just two runs on two hits in six innings of work. Ross came on in the seventh, striking out one while allowing two runs on three hits.
Next up for AACC is a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at Shenandoah JV on Thursday, April 24. The Riverhawks return home to face CCBC Essex in a noon divisional doubleheader on Sunday, April 27.
