Baseball Fends Off Owls in Region 20 Opener
Riverhawks host Mercer County and Camden CC this weekend
LARGO, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College baseball team fended off a late rally by Prince George's to defeat the Owls, 3-2, in a single, nine-inning game Friday afternoon.
Reliever Scott Grabau struck out three and allowed two unearned runs on five hits in five innings of work to pick up the win and move to 2-0 on the season.
AACC scored two runs in the fourth and added one on in the fifth. Prince George's scored twice in a two-out rally in the eighth before Grabau induced a groundout to end the inning. The Owls got one base runner aboard in the ninth, but Grabau struck out the final batter to claim the win.
Camden Hodges drove in the first run on a groundout with the bases loaded in the fourth. Matt Dove followed with a sac fly to give AACC a 2-0 lead.
Travis Fleshman doubled to left center with one out in the fifth and crossed the plate on an Owls' infield error to make it 3-0 AACC.
Starter Andrew Darrow gave up three hits while walking three and striking out one through four innings.
The Riverhawks managed just six hits on the day, facing a tough Owls' pitching staff that struck out 11 batters.
AACC hosts a pair of non-region doubleheaders this weekend, facing Mercer County Saturday at noon and Camden CC Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
