ARNOLD, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College men's soccer dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to visiting Cape Fear Community College in the season opener for both teams on Friday night at Siegert Field.
The Riverhawks (0-1) controlled much of the first half, outshooting Cape Fear 13-6, but could not break through against Sea Devils goalkeeper Aydan Scharf, who made seven saves before halftime and finished with 10 on the night to earn the shutout.
Cape Fear (2-0) found the difference in the 77th minute when Cristiano Sharpe converted off an assist from Eno Baker, putting the Sea Devils ahead 1-0.
Anne Arundel continued to generate chances late, including efforts from Lucas Cerulla (team-high six shots) and Kevin Carter, who struck the crossbar in the 41st minute. Freshman keeper Ethan Kiniry kept the Riverhawks within striking distance, registering seven saves.
The match grew physical down the stretch, with three yellow cards issued in the final 15 minutes—two to Anne Arundel and one to Cape Fear.
Anne Arundel finished with a 20-16 advantage in shots, but Scharf's performance in net and Sharpe's decisive finish sealed the win for the visitors.
The Riverhawks open Region 20 action Tuesday in a 4 p.m. game at Carroll Community College.
