After a slow start in the first period, the Riverhawks closed the Cougars lead to 11, heading to the half with the score 42-31. Sarah Healy (Davidsonville, MD/South River) posted 10 points and 4 rebounds for AACC in the first half. Marci Augustin (Upper Marlboro, MD/ Riverdale Baptist) would finish the half with 9 points.
A halftime pep-talk from Coach Makell would see the Riverhawks take the 3rd quarter over the third place MD JUCO Conference and NJCAA DII Region XX Cougars, 17-16. Karley Haensler (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) led the way with 8 points in the quarter. Augustin would tack on 5 more points, bringing her game total to 14. Now down 10 points, the Riverhawks were in striking distance heading into the fourth quarter.
The Cougars; however, would sustain their lead despite Augustin's quarter leading 9 points, and pull away to the 83-71 victory. With the win, the Cougars continue their dominance in the conference, moving to 7-1. Despite the loss, the Riverhawks prove once again they can handle the test and play with non-divisional opponents.
Augustin's 23 point, 8 rebound and 4 assist game comes at the right time as the Riverhawks start to gear up toward the postseason and will need their shot caller at her best. Haensler would finish with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Healy posted another double-double (8th) with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Riverhawks will travel to the NJCAA DII Region XX Hawks of Southern Maryland for a Friday night doubleheader, January 25 at 5pm. A win over the Hawks would even both teams records at 4-6 and give the Riverhawks the 8th seed in the final MD JUCO Conference Basketball Tournament with a few conference contests left to play.
