Hot Start Cools in Women's Basketball Loss at PSU Fayette
McKenzie Gilbert scored a career-high 17 points
LEMONT FURNACE, Pa. -- The Anne Arundel Community College women's basketball team led after the opening quarter, but couldn't keep pace over the final three periods, falling 75-56 to Penn State Fayette on Friday night in non-conference action at PSU Fayette's Community Center.
Anne Arundel came out strong, building a 19-15 advantage after one quarter behind a hot shooting start from Kiara Vaselaros, who scored 11 points in the opening frame. The Riverhawks stayed within striking distance at halftime, but a 20-point third quarter by Penn State–Fayette created separation.
McKenzie Gilbert led AACC with a career-high 17 points while adding six rebounds, four blocks, three assists and a pair of steals. Julia Fox contributed 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench, and Ryleigh Smoot dished out nine assists while pulling down five rebounds. Anne Arundel finished with 21 assists on 24 made baskets.
Despite being outrebounded 56-37, the Riverhawks forced 16 turnovers and stayed competitive into the fourth quarter before the home team pulled away late.
Anne Arundel (0-6) has a quick turnaround with a 12 p.m. Region 20 divisional game at Potomac State Saturday.
