With each team winning their semifinal matches on Friday (10/27), the Riverhawks (no.4 seed) faced the Raptors of Montgomery College (no.3 seed) for the 2017 NJCAA DIII District/Region XX Women's Soccer Championship title on Sunday (10/29) – hosted at Anne Arundel Community College. The Raptors of Montgomery would earn the title, defeating the Riverhawks 3-1.
Montgomery would score first in the championship game, as Raptor Gaelin Hirabayashi netted one on her own, past AACC goalkeeper Deanna Valerien (Gambrills, MD/North County) just three minutes in. Hirabayashi would find the goal again for the Raptors, this time assisted by Nicole Godoy just 15 minutes in. Despite their efforts, the Riverhawks would fail to score in the first 45 minutes – ending the first half with Montgomery leading 2-0.
Early second half action would serve well for the Riverhawks as Gabriell Keogh (Gambrills, MD/Arundel) would get AACC on the board, cutting the Raptor lead to just 1 goal (2-1) at the 61 minute mark.
With the championship title on the line, each team would push aggressively on offense but it would be Montogmery, and once again – Hirabayashi, scoring a 3rd goal of the game at the 82nd minute.
AACC would be unable to come back from the 2 goal deficit and the Raptors of Montgomery would earn the 3-1 vicotry, claiming the 2017 NJCAA District & Regional women's soccer championship title.
For their tournament performance, Madeline Stevenson (Severn, MD/Archbishop Spalding), Gabriell Keogh (Gambrills, MD), and Kayla Beasely (Baltimore, MD/Old Mill) were awarded to the All-Tournament Team.
With the loss in the championship game, the 2017 Riverhawk women's soccer season has come to an end. They finished with a respectable record of 9-5-1 overall, and 3-3-1 in the conference.
