Johnson County Tops Women's Soccer at National Tournament

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Anne Arundel Community College women's soccer team fell to second seed Johnson County, 2-0, Tuesday in pool play at the NJCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championships. AACC, which advanced to the national tournament for the second time in three years, finishes the season with a 14-3-1 record -- the most wins in a season since 2011.

The Riverhawks recorded double-digit wins this season for the first time since 2014, and made their first appearance in the DII national tournament this season; AACC has now appeared in the NJCAA tournament at all three divisions.

The Lady Cavaliers (19-0-3) got on the board in the 40^th minute when Lily Marshall one timed a cross from Tatum Bresette past a diving Pela Saunders. Saunders finished the first half with four saves and made six in the game.

Johnson County doubled its lead in the 53^rd minute when Karsen Koehler sent a cross through the box to find Maya Wallace crashing in. Saunders made the initial save, but the ball got loose and dribbled into the net.

AACC had a great opportunity in the 52^nd minute. A throw in at the 18-yard marker by Jaylin Sheffield pinged its way around the box and out to the foot of McKenzie Gilbert, whose rocket of a shot was blocked by a Johnson County player.

The Riverhawks had another great chance in the 72^nd minute. AACC earned its first corner of the game and Emma Miga served it up to a crowd in front of the net. Several Riverhawks got a touch on the ball, but Johnson County cleared it out.

Johnson County keeper, Katie Stoskopf, earned her 10^th shutout of the season, as the Lady Cavaliers advance to the semifinals on Thursday, November 21.
