Men's Hoops Falls Late to Frederick, 73–70
Riverhawks travel to Chesapeake Friday for divisional matchup
ARNOLD, Md. – The Anne Arundel Community College men's basketball built a 17-point first-half lead and put together one of its strongest offensive frames of the season, but the Riverhawks were unable to withstand a late surge from Frederick Community College, falling 73–70 on Tuesday night at Jenkins Gym.
AACC opened the night blistering from the field, shooting 60% in the first half while knocking down six 3-pointers. The Riverhawks led by double digits for more than 10 minutes of the half, leading by as many as 17 midway through the stanza, and carried a 43–37 advantage into halftime.
Guard Ryan Stacy scored 13 of his team-high 20 points in the opening half while adding three rebounds, two steals and two assists overall. Jaylen Marbley provided a critical perimeter spark early, sinking a pair of threes in the first period and finishing with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. Zamar Jones added seven points, three rebounds and three assists, while John Hutton knocked down two threes on his way to an 11-point outing.
Forward Al-Ameen Sanni anchored the Riverhawks defensively and on the boards, securing 13 rebounds—including six defensive boards in each half—along with 10 points and three blocks for his second double-double of the season.
After AACC's fast start, Frederick (5–5, 3–3 Region 20) climbed back behind a strong second half from Kylan Johnson (25 points) and a dominant night on the offensive glass, where the Cougars collected 23 offensive rebounds. Frederick outscored AACC, 36–27, after halftime and held the Riverhawks to 38% shooting in the second frame.
The Cougars claimed their first lead of the second half with less than 30 seconds to play and held on despite late foul attempts from the Riverhawks. Frederick's physicality proved decisive, leading to a 48–33 rebounding advantage and a 32–22 edge in points in the paint.
The Riverhawks (0–6, 0–4 Region 20) return to action Friday in a 7 p.m. Region 20 divisional game at Chesapeake before closing out the semester at home against Division I Baltimore City in a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, December 17.
